security
Why do we conform? Why are we afraid to be alone? We cannot stand being apart from another for long, because our limited self-concept only exists in relation to someone or something else. This is why gossip is so ironic- the one who gossips needs the person mocked, otherwise comparison would be impossible and the goal of social elevation thwarted. Most of us claim to be self-sufficient individuals, carrying much pride, yet run to the nearest institution or mentor the moment our ideas or beliefs are challenged. So, the question is, can one live free of all influence? What is left in a mind untouched by society? If one investigates this thoroughly, they may find that it is the center of self-reference which constantly seeks security, validation, and comfort; the minds desire to grasp onto something permanent in a reality that is perpetually moving, born and dying. It may sound fearful to some, but a free mind lives fully with every movement. Each interaction and relationship becomes sacred, an expression of that which is beyond ourselves. This is not an ideal to be reached by the mind seeking permanency, but a thorough and utter relaxation into what already is.
